Upala
Upala is about 200m above sea level and has an average temperature of 27 degrees celcius. The area is drained by the Pizote river which belongs to the Zapote river basin. Most of the population works in agriculture, primarily cacao, beans, corn, rice, tubers and livestock.
The first settlers arrived from Nicaragua, Cañas and Bagaces and planted traditional crops such as cacao. The original name of Zapote was changed to the indigenous name of Upala. Upala became a canton in 1970 and is one of the more recent cantons created in Costa Rica.
